Fourth anniversary of the full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine
Today we mark a bitter anniversary – the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine. While there was still a great deal of solidarity and action for our Ukrainian partners at the beginning of the war, public attention to this war has waned, even within the SCI network, in the face of many other crises in recent years.
However, Russia continues to attack the whole of Ukraine. International efforts have so far failed to bring an end to the war. Our partners in Kyiv, our friends in Kharkiv and also in Vinnytsia remain under great pressure. In winter conditions, attacks on energy infrastructure repeatedly lead to restrictions on heating and electricity. Under constant drone and rocket fire, survival is the main concern in many places, especially in heavily affected regions. And even where the direct attacks are less noticeable, the war is placing a strain on the social fabric and the community spirit of the local people.
Cooperation with Ukrainian partners
We constantly strive to stay in touch with our Ukrainian partners. Last year, we welcomed guests from Alternative-V in Kyiv, the Development Centre Pangeya Ultima in Vinnytsia in the west, and the NGO Stella in Kharkiv in the east to Germany. We were delighted to welcome a young Ukrainian woman as camp leader. Five others were actively involved in youth exchanges and seminars with us.
However, once again, our funding applications for bilateral projects with Ukraine have been rejected. We have already had to swallow our frustration at being rejected three times. This is particularly tragic because there are so many good ideas: for rebuilding destroyed communities, for climate-friendly and climate-just living, or simply for a change of perspective through international exchange and new confidence for young people in Ukraine.
We not only want to welcome Ukrainian volunteers and guests to our organisation, but also to be actively involved in Ukraine ourselves.
We remain in contact
As our Ukrainian partner organisations regularly ask us not to forget them, we are inviting interested and active individuals to another online discussion on the fourth anniversary of the full-scale attack on Ukraine – if possible, once again together with Ukrainian partners who will provide information about their situation on the ground and their planned activities.
